Jamaica Plain Fitness Brings Fat Loss Outside the Gym

It's 5:40am on the outskirts of Jamaica Pond.

Ultimate Bootcamp Founder Jill Tomich gives the first instructions of the morning to a sleepy-eyed group of Jamaica Plain and Brookline residents.

"We're going to get a great Upper Body and Core workout today.  But first, let's warm-up.  Jog it up to the softball fields.  Get in groups of 3. Say hello, introduce yourself..."

While the very idea of boot camp workouts is enough to scare away the timid, Tomich says the reason why so many Ultimate Bootcamp participants return month after month is the group camaraderie.

"There are a lot of awful personal trainers who think a boot camp class is just barking orders as loud as possible.  But let's get real, participants don't care how obnoxious an instructor can be.  People care that they get results. Plus, I know their names and how to create a positive team atmosphere. It's like Cheers...sometimes you want to go where everybody knows your name."

Ultimate Bootcamp workouts around Jamaica Pond begin every 4 weeks. Check out the morning and evening schedule.  www.ultimatebootcamp.com/brookline

What is the Safest & Best Sunscreen?

by Jill Tomich
Ultimate Bootcamp Founder
Certified Health Coach and Mind Body Specialist

Outdoor workouts are finally here!

While the warm sunshine is a welcomed change, it also means we need to think about sun protection.  But with controversy spreading over chemical compounds in sunscreen, which sunscreen is the safest for your outdoor workout?

best sunscreen

According to the European Commission, half of the U.S. sunscreens that meet the FDA regulations would not make it to store shelves in Europe, where, since 2006, sunscreen manufacturers have voluntarily complied with stricter European Union standards.

The Environmental Working Group (EWG) is a U.S. based research and advocacy organization that, among other things, tests the safety of cleaning products, food and cosmetics, including sunscreens.

They recommend zinc oxide sunscreens are their first choice for sun protection.

You might remember zinc oxide as the goopy white sunscreen lifeguards use to protect their nose from sun damage.

Lucky for us there are now transparent zinc oxide sunscreens that are more fashionably fit to wear to an outdoor boot camp workout or while enjoying an outdoor patio lunch on Newbury Street.

You can find a complete list of EWG-approved sunscreens on their web site.

Here are three of my favorite zinc oxide sunscreens:

Badger Sunscreen

They have everything from baby sunscreen to sport sunscreen.  I prefer the the baby sunscreen over the sport sunscreen which I find to be a bit sticky.  I make sure to re-apply the baby sunscreen after splashing in the water or after a sweat-drenching outdoor workout.  I also love that Badger Sunscreen is biodegradable and safe for when I'm snorkeling around coral reefs.

Blue Lizard Sunscreen

After mistakenly leaving my sunscreen at home last summer, a friend of mine let me use her Blue Lizard sunscreen.  The sensitive skin formula was fragrance-free which made the beach to bar transition a cinch.  Blue Lizard also has sunscreen specifically for face, sport and baby.

EltaMD UV Face Sunscreen

I workout not only to feel good, but to look good. So of course I do what I can to make sure my skin stays just as tight as my body!  Not only can the sun cause damage, but so can the chemicals in some cosmetics.  So everyday, no matter if I wear make-up or not, I apply the safest sunscreen to my face.  My esthetician introduced me to the EltaMD line of skin care and I love the lightweight formula.

Do you have a favorite safe sunscreen to share? LMK!

Boston Runners, Are Traditional Marathon Training Techniques Obsolete?

by Jill Tomich
Ultimate Bootcamp Founder
Certified Health Coach & Mind Body Specialist

The 118th Boston Marathon is just around the corner. Whether you're an avid runner or recreational one, you know half the training battle is getting to the start line injury-free.

The most common injuries runners develop are caused by too many hours on the pavement and not enough hours cross-training. The best runners in the world cross-train. They know just how crucial a well-balanced body is for pain-free running and longevity in the sport.

In his mid-forties, Ultimate Bootcamp Cambridge participant Ed took a new approach to his recent marathon training.

Ultimate Bootcamp Cambridge participant Ed
"I did long runs on weekends, bootcamp Monday-Thursday for 3 months.  Much less wear and tear on my knees by reducing total training miles.  Much better stamina and muscle strength that allowed me to blow through the wall I ran into last year at mile 18."

With this new cross-training approach to his marathon training, Ed knocked 40 minutes off his marathon time!

Why should runners cross-train?

Matt Fitzgerald, running coach and author of "Racing Weight: How to Get Lean for Peak Performance" states there are 5 main benefits of cross-training for runners.
  1. Fewer injuries
  2. Faster rehabilitation
  3. Greater Aerobic Fitness
  4. More Power
  5. Greater Efficiency

Whether you're chasing a new PR or simply hope to make it through 2014 injury-free, Ultimate Bootcamp workouts can help you cross-train your way to balanced muscles, increased speed and reduce the wear and tear of traditional long-distance training programs.

Protein-Packed Breakfast - Post Workout Meals

by Jill Tomich
Ultimate Bootcamp Co-Founder
Certified Health Coach and Mind/Body Specialist

When there is little time between your early morning workout and work, it can be difficult to fit in a healthy breakfast.  Especially when you need a protein-packed breakfast to help you recover from your boot camp workout.

Whether you're looking for a gluten-free breakfast (no grains), a paleo breakfast (no dairy, legumes, grains) or vegetarian breakfast (no animal products) there is a protein-packed breakfast alternative for you.

1. Green Protein Smoothie Breakfast

If you have a hard time fitting green vegetables into your daily meals, try "hiding" them in a green smoothie. If you're new to making green smoothies try spinach or lacinato kale as the main green.  These two green veggies are so mild in taste that you barely notice it. For a protein boost, add organic frozen shelled edamame (soybeans) or a scoop of spirulina-based protein (a sea algae naturally high in protein)

Peach Mango Green Smoothie Recipe

1/4 cup frozen shelled edamame
big handful of spinach or lacinato (tuscan) kale
1/2 banana
1/4 cup frozen peaches
1/4 cup frozen mango
1 scoop Spirulina Protein Powder
Cover the fruit with water or coconut water and blend until smooth

Shelled edamame adds natural protein to smoothies

Green smoothies are much, much, much easier to make when you have a powerful blender.  I love my Vitamix blender. Although it was an investment, my Vitamix is now easily the most-used kitchen appliance in my house. Amazon.com usually has good deals. You can get this Vitamix 1300 TurboBlend 4500 for under $400.

2. Apple with Almond Butter

Simply slice an apple and slather on your favorite nut butter.

3. Smoked Salmon Lettuce Wraps

For breakfast on-the-go wrap smoked salmon (read the label for sugar and salt content), tomatoes and sliced red onions into Romaine or Boston bibb lettuce. Add hot peppers or hot sauce for a spicy kick without the calories.

4. Sweet Potato Apple Hash with Bacon

If you have 10 minutes to cook breakfast you can't go wrong with sweet potatoes (starchy carbs help you recover from endurance boot camp workouts).  Kids of all ages will love this family-friendly recipe, so you might want to double it ;o)

Sweet Potato Apple Hash Recipe

4 oz high-quality, organic thick-cut bacon or Canadian Bacon
1 apple, chopped
1 small sweet potato, chopped
1 tablespoon coconut oil
cinnamon & pepper to taste

In a small pan, cook bacon.  In another pan, saute apples and sweet potato in coconut oil until soft. Add cinnamon and pepper.  Once bacon is cooked, add to apple/sweet potato mixture and mash together.

Warning: If you don't know where your food comes from you need to get educated....now!  How your food is raised and harvested drastically affects your health.  If you haven't yet, watch the movies Food Inc. and Food Matters

5.  Breakfast Berry Bowl

Wheat in America has been genetically modified to resist diseases and drought.  As a result,  it contains 3x more gluten than grain found in Europe.  For many, this means even wheat pasta, whole grain bread, wheat crackers and other "healthy" grain options can upset their stomachs and wreak havoc on their thyroid.

Choose ancient grains instead.  Grains like farro, spelt, kamut, amaranth and quinoa have higher nutritional profiles than standard American grains and pack more protein.  When cooking these grains for dinner, make extra so you can make a Breakfast Berry Bowl the next day. Bob's Red Mill carries most of these ancient grains and can be found in most grocery and big box stores in the natural food aisle.

Quinoa Berry Bowl

1/2 cup cooked plain quinoa
1/2 cup fresh or frozen berries
1 medjool date or 1/2 banana for natural sweetness
1/4 cup walnuts
cinammon, nutmeg and real vanilla extract to taste
In a saucepan, warm the berries. Add the cooked quinoa just until warm.  Slice dates or banana on top. Sprinkle with walnuts. Enjoy!
